The day I received my letter from DKMS saying that I was a potential match with someone to give my bone marrow to was an exciting moment. I had registered around 2 years ago at a local drive. My husband has been on the registry for almost 30 years and has been notified once but it didn't go through. He and I were really thrilled at the adventure ahead and of course, I began my "evangelizing" to anyone who would listen about how exciting this was.
The process itself was not at all difficult. As a matter of fact, I appreciate having all of the medical work done and knowing that I am in great health. That is just one of many benefits that you will receive; the most important is to be offering the Gift of Life for a person!
There were forms to fill out and blood to be taken and once I was cleared to go, the fun began. The nurses and staff at Hackensack University Medical Center were extremely professional and caring. As they pointed out, their first and main concern was my welfare. As much as I knew that my donation was helping a person in need, they never wanted me to do something I was uncomfortable with or be in pain.
More than 1.7 million others are fighting for the cause.
